"He Who Cannot Be" Matched

Sunday, November 2, 2008
It was April 24th of 1973 A.D. A beautiful lady gave birth to a boy child. Anything special? Well,of course not. Come on,boys are born in so many different corners of the world everyday, and this one was no different. The child lay on the bed with his eyes closed. Little did he know that he is going to make millions of eyes open wide and stare in astonishment at him just a few years down the lane; little did he know that he is going to raise the curtains for a new era where the game of cricket would be taken to a totally new and a then unimaginable level. The child soon started wailing, and the voice that was going to inspire thousands of people soon, was heard on Mother Earth for the first time. When his parents named him, little did they even guess that this name was going to be echoed all around the world in a few years time...........

Oh!! Yeah!!! You guessed it right. Of course this prodigious child is none other the most precious gem in the cricket crown- SACHIN RAMESH TENDULKAR- the man who has never traveled from good to great, but always from great to greater.

As a child, he loved cricket as a miser would love his money and soon this love transformed into every Indian's pride. He might have begun his International career at the tender age of 16 facing the Pakistani pacemen with a lot of guts and standing at the crease with a bleeding nose just to say, "Bowl ahead mate, I am ready to bat"; but his name was etched in the World record books earlier, when he purposely avoided eye contact with his coach on his way to a record breaking mammoth patnership for his school team with Vinod Kambli, in the fear that his coach will ask them to declare.

The journey that began at 16 is still on (touch wood), his physical height by no means an indication of the heights he has achieved or the peaks he has scaled. No flamboyance of today can ever come close to his legacy. But his ride through miles and milestones has not been without roadblocks. Even the greatest of them learn and evolve; Sachin has been no exception. There have been phases of failures, threat from injuries, the scrutiny and the pressures, but he has overcome them all with poise. His maturity may have grown with age but when pushed beyond conscious thought, into the realm of reflex and reaction, Tendulkar reprises the brilliant spontaneous style that characterised his younger days.

The only batsman whom every bowler can bowl to courageously without the slightest fear of bowling a bad ball. Well, where will the fear arise from when even the good ones are anyway punished? Undoubtedly the only homo sapien whom God ever fears. Wondering the cause of the fear? Come on, even God fears his own replacement!!

He has spared no cricketing nation in the world of a massacre off his bat. An idol to every child and an inspiration to every adult, he has single handedly taken Indian cricket to great heights so much so that cricket minus Sachin in India seems void. His laurels do not stop with him as a batsman. While his aggregate may probably be surpassed by someone in the years to come, I seriously doubt if anyone can be as great a human being as Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar- a man who has made every citizen of India, proud to be an Indian.

"Men may come, and men may go, but his legacy shall go on forever."
